Unions continue anti-government protests with action in five provinces

Trade unions are continuing their regional protests against government policies on Tuesday, with action in the provinces of Antwerp, Limburg, Namur, Liège and Luxembourg. According to the unions, the government is creating “social breakdown”.
Last Thursday, protests took place in West Flanders, East Flanders and Hainaut. Further action is planned this Thursday in Brussels, Flemish Brabant and Walloon Brabant. The provincial protests are the run-up to a national demonstration on 12 March.
In Antwerp, there will be a gathering at 10:00 at Operaplein, where a demonstration will leave for Groenplaats at 11:00. In Limburg, campaigns on purchasing power will be organised in Genk, Hasselt and Beringen.
In Namur, an action in front of the town hall is being organised and in Marche-en-Famenne in Luxembourg, pamphlets are being distributed. In Liège, there are calls for a general strike. A “people’s tribunal” is being held, with the government in the dock, followed by a demonstration. A rally is planned at Liège Airport at 13:00.
The impact of the action remains to be seen. In Antwerp, the day of action will cause disruption at public transport operator De Lijn. An alternative service will be organised.
