‘Incredibly proud’: Vandromme wins US Open junior title without dropping a set

Belgium’s Jeline Vandromme has won the junior competition at the US Open without dropping a set. The 17-year-old from Bruges is the first Belgian to have reached the final since Kirsten Flipkens in 2003, who also went on to win the title.
Vandromme beat Sweden’s Lea Nilsson in straight sets to clinch her first junior singles title on Saturday, winning 7-6, 6-2 in 90 minutes. It was her 23rd consecutive singles victory
She is the first Belgian Grand Slam winner in the girls’ juniors since An-Sophie Mestach, who won the Australian Open in 2011.
“First and foremost, I’m incredibly proud,” she told a press conference after the match. “This was supposed to be my last junior tournament, and I wanted to make it memorable. I think I succeeded.”
Vandromme also reached the final of the doubles with her partner, Lithuanian Laima Vladson. The pair lost to Czech sisters Jana and Alena Kovackova, the third seeds, shortly after her singles victory.
Vandromme is also the first Belgian girl in 23 years to reach the final of the doubles at the US Open. Flipkens and Elke Clijsters were losing finalists in 2002.
