Ghent University spin-off listed among world’s most sustainable AI applications

A Ghent University spin-off has been named among the world’s top 100 artificial intelligence applications contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The recognition comes from the International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI), which is affiliated with Unesco. The Belgian company, Nobl.ai, appears on IRCAI’s annual list of leading AI initiatives aligned with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Nobl.ai became fully independent from Ghent University in February 2024. The company was founded by AI professor Tijl De Bie and computer scientists Alexandru Cristian Mara and Bo Kang.
The start-up develops AI tools for the labour market. Its software automates job matching, extracts structured data from job vacancies and CVs, and provides career guidance using artificial intelligence. “The technology is currently being used on labour market platforms that together serve more than a million job seekers,” the company said.
IRCAI describes Nobl.ai as “promising” in relation to five of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on tackling poverty and reducing inequality, including gender inequality.
“The system is built with reliability and accountability as core values. It includes strategies for detecting and mitigating bias, ensuring equal opportunities for all,” IRCAI said.
