Wolf Noëlla thought to have been killed on Limburg road

There are strong indications that the wolf killed on a Limburg road on Thursday morning is Noëlla, the female that established Flanders’ first wolf pack in 150 years.
The adult wolf was killed after being hit by a vehicle on the N76 in Meeuwen, near a wildlife crossing, at 6:45 on Thursday. The Nature Aid Centre went to collect the animal for investigation.
“It is an older animal,” said Koen Van Muylem, spokesperson for INBO, the institute for nature and forest research. “We can tell by the state of the teeth and the characteristics of the fur. Then there is the location of the collision.”
A young female was killed at the same place last month. The wolf population in Limburg now numbers five individuals.
Noëlla was first seen in Flanders in 2020. With her mate, she established the first wolf pack in the region in 150 years. Only one other solitary wolf is confirmed to be living in Flanders: a female called Emma, in the north of Antwerp province. Noëlla's mate, Maurice, has been missing since late August and is suspected to have died.
