Wolf-proof fences lead to reduction in attacks on animals

The wolf-proof fences installed in Flanders since the summer are proving to be effective. According to the Wolf Fencing Team, the number of wolf attacks on animals within properly enclosed pastures has fallen significantly.

A series of attacks on ponies and horses in August caused concern among owners in Limburg. In response, the Agency for Nature and Forests bought emergency wolf-proof fences, which are being temporarily installed in areas with the highest risk of damage. They offer immediate protection while owners make their permanent fences wolf-proof.

All 67 animal owners in Oudsbergen and Peer who contacted the agency have now been provided with a solution.

“In Oudsbergen and Peer, attacks on ponies have completely stopped,” the Wolf Fencing Team said on Monday. “Although recent incidents in Beringen and Heusden-Zolder show that the risk area is shifting now that the young wolves are accompanying their parents, the calm in the previous risk zones proves that the measures taken are effective.”

The Wolf Fencing Team Belgium is an initiative of Natuurpunt and WWF Belgium, supported by the Agency for Nature and Forests and the province of Limburg. The team has received a record 533 requests this year, more than 400 of which came from owners of horses.
