Twenty-three wines receive gold medal in Best Belgian Wine competition

Twenty-three Belgian wines were awarded a gold medal on Wednesday by the Flemish Sommeliers Association (VVS) following a tasting at the Ter Groene Poorte Hotel School in Bruges.
This was the 21st edition of the Best Belgian Wine competition, which has been organised by the VVS since 2005 and has become a benchmark in Belgium's wine sector.
"Professional tasters and strict discretion guarantee the objectivity and quality of the competition," the VVS said. "We are seeing increasing interest from Wallonia, which primarily offers sparkling wines for tasting. In Flanders, we are seeing a slight increase in sparkling wines with appellations. The quality brand BelBul is likely a contributing factor. Flanders also remains strongly represented with still white wines."
This year, 231 wines were initially entered, but due to shipping issues 226 from 65 estates were ultimately tasted. A total of 68 medals were awarded: 23 gold, 23 silver and 22 bronze.
Eight juries, made up of nearly 70 sommeliers and wine experts from Flanders and Wallonia, blind-tasted all the wines and judged them according to strict criteria. The FPS Economy supervised the organisation.
