Trains from Belgium stopped at Dutch border as winter weather causes disruption

Train services from Belgium were unable to enter the Netherlands on Wednesday morning because of problems on the Dutch rail network caused by the weather.
Dutch rail authorities have told infrastructure manager Infrabel that all trains using the regular rail network must stop at Essen, the last station on the Belgian side of the northern border. This is affecting EuroCity services between Brussels and Rotterdam, EuroCity Direct trains between Brussels and Amsterdam, and the local service between Puurs-Sint-Amands and Roosendaal.
Belgian rail operator SNCB/NMBS says there is currently no wider impact on train services within Belgium. Trains travelling to the Netherlands via Maastricht are still running normally.
Despite snowfall across Belgium on Wednesday morning, the rail network in Belgium is operating smoothly. Both SNCB and Infrabel report few delays, with most problems linked to issues in the Netherlands. Passengers are advised to check journey planners before travelling.
The disruption comes after severe winter weather across Europe this week. Snow and freezing temperatures brought rail and air traffic in the Netherlands largely to a halt on Tuesday, led to hundreds of cancelled flights, and caused widespread problems in several other European countries.
