Tinne Gilis crowned European squash champion for second time
Belgium's Tinne Gilis has been crowned European squash champion for the second time in her career. The 26-year-old won the final of the European Squash Championships in Cuenca, Spain, on Saturday.
Gilis is the world's number seven and was the first seed in the European tournament. She won the final against France's Melissa Alves, ranked 25th in the world, in four sets: 11-4, 11-8, 9-11 and 11-9.
This is Gilis' second European title after she triumphed in the final against her older sister Nele in 2022. She could not defend her title last year due to injury.
"It was a tough final and that makes this win even nicer"
However, the European title last year remained in the family as 28-year-old Nele Gillis secured her second European title. This time, Nele Gilis didn’t take part in the European Championships, choosing to focus on next week's Egyptian Open in Giza.
“It’s an honour to win this title again,” Tinne Gilis said. “I am proud, especially of the way I won. I am really satisfied with how I played. It was a tough final and that makes this win even nicer.”
Earlier this year, the Gilis sisters led the Belgian women’s team to their first European title at the European Team Championships in Zurich, Switzerland.
