Belgium's Nele Gilis wins European Squash Championship
Belgium's Nele Gilis was crowned European squash champion on Friday in Wroclaw, Poland. Gilis defeated French player Enora Villard in three sets 11-1, 11-7 and 11-3 in the final.
The final of the European Individual Squash Championships lasted 33 minutes. It is the second European title for 27-year-old Gilis, who won her first in 2019. She won silver at the championships in 2016 and 2022 and bronze in 2017 and 2018.
Tinne Gilis, Nele's younger sister and 2022 European champion, was unable to defend her title due to a minor injury. She did manage to climb to 10th in the PSA rankings, her highest ranking to date. Both sisters will be competing in the Paris Squash 2023 tournament, a PSA Platinum event with a 190,000-dollar prize pool.
