Thousands of free tulips welcome in the spring in Antwerp

100,000 tulips transformed Antwerp’s Operaplein square on Saturday. The public were invited to pick a bunch of flowers for free at the event organised by the Flemish centre for agricultural and fisheries marketing, VLAM.

The hundreds of people in the queue were each given a bag and could choose 15 tulips to take home. 

Actor and radio presenter Charlotte Sieben is the patron of this year's event. “I’m very honoured, because I love being in nature,” she said. “I also like to make my home colourful with a bouquet of flowers. I really enjoy that. So I’m very happy to be part of this day and to see everyone picking flowers here.”
