The Federation of Belgian Businesses welcomes EU–Australia trade deal as boost for exports

The Federation of Belgian Businesses (VBO) has welcomed the free trade agreement reached on Tuesday between the European Union and Australia, following eight years of negotiations. The deal, which still requires formal approval, aims to deepen economic ties by reducing trade barriers and strengthening cooperation between the two partners.
"At a time when trade relations are increasingly being used as a geopolitical weapon, and protectionism is on the rise, it is wise to invest in partnerships with countries that share our values," said VBO CEO Pieter Timmermans. "Europe and Australia represent the same economic logic, democratic principles and high standards regarding labour, the environment, and food safety."
New opportunities for Belgian businesses
The agreement is expected to eliminate or reduce tariffs on a wide range of goods, simplify customs procedures, and improve access to public procurement markets. It also includes provisions on digital trade and investment protection, offering greater legal certainty for businesses operating across borders.
According to the VBO, these measures should create new opportunities for Belgian companies. "Lower tariffs, simplified customs procedures, better access to public procurement, modern digital trade rules, and greater investment certainty will also benefit Belgian enterprises," it said.
Trade between Belgium and Australia is already significant. In 2024, Belgian exports to Australia totalled 2.4 billion EUR, mainly consisting of pharmaceutical products, machinery and specialised food preparations. Imports reached 1.3 billion, with mineral products, plant goods and chemical products accounting for the largest share.
