Swiss building materials giant inaugurates floating solar farm with 55,000 panels in Hainaut

Swiss cement and building materials giant Holcim has on Friday inaugurated a floating solar park in Obourg, Hainaut province. Its 55,000 solar panels together generate 31 megawatts of power.
The solar panels are located on a quarry, which has been transformed into a lake, near the Holcim site in Obourg. The floating island is stabilised using 128 anchors.
The solar panels are intended to supply energy to a factory that is currently still under construction. “On sunny days, we will be self-sufficient,” stated Vincent Michel, director of the company’s GO4ZERO programme. “In total, the installation will cover 15 per cent of our annual requirements.”
