Suspicious packages at Brussels-South station prove harmless, train traffic resumed

The three suspicious packages found on Monday evening at the Brussels-South railway station have all been checked and found to be harmless, reported the federal police. Trains have been running again on most tracks since 8.02 pm, and the station has also been reopened, announced Belgian railway infrastructure manager Infrabel.
All train services to and from Brussels-South station had been suspended from around 5.20 pm on Monday after three suspicious packages were found, of which one was on a train on platform 20 and one was on platform 18. According to Infrabel spokesperson Frédéric Sacré, the train on platform 20 was en route to Antwerp.
The incident caused major disruption in the afternoon at one of the capital’s main transport hubs.
At around 7.45 pm, the federal police announced that all the packages had been found to be harmless. “Since 8.02 pm, trains have been able to run again at Brussels South, on all tracks except tracks 19 and 20,” stated Infrabel spokesperson Thomas Baeken. “The station has also been reopened.”
Brussels public transport company STIB-MIVB also confirmed that metro, tram and bus services are gradually resuming in the area. The transport company had earlier reported disruptions and diversions on several metro, tram and bus routes.
