Seven arrested in investigation into Liège synagogue explosion

Seven people have been arrested during house searches carried out as part of the investigation into an explosion at a synagogue in Liège in March, the federal public prosecutor’s office has confirmed.
The searches were carried out on the orders of an investigating judge as part of a federal terrorism investigation. “Seven people were arrested during these operations,” the prosecutor’s office said. “At this stage, and in the interests of the investigation, no further information can be disclosed.”
The explosion, which took place at around 4:00 on 9 March at the main entrance to the synagogue, did not injure anyone but caused significant damage to property.
The windows of the synagogue, as well as those of neighbouring homes, were shattered, and the synagogue’s door was damaged by flames. A video of the explosion later surfaced, showing a masked man.
The Jewish community believed it was an antisemitic attack, and the public prosecutor’s office also saw “possible indications of a terrorist offence”.
Following the incident, the federal government decided to deploy military personnel to reinforce police surveillance. The synagogue reopened two months after the explosion.
