Robust growth for Flemish high-tech exports in 2022
Flemish high-tech exports reached 66.8 billion euros in 2022, an increase of 16 per cent in current prices compared to 2021. High-tech exports accounted for 13.9 per cent of total Flemish exports, according to data from Statistics Flanders, the Flemish government's information network.
Total exports grew more strongly (26 per cent) than high-tech exports in 2022. High-tech exports are exports of specific categories such as aerospace, computers, electronics and telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, scientific instruments, electrical machinery, chemical products, non-electrical machinery and weapons.
More than half of the growth in high-tech exports in 2022 is due to an increase in exports of pharmaceuticals, which account for 73 per cent of high-tech exports. The other main product categories were electronics and telecommunications (10 per cent) and scientific instruments (8 per cent).
According to Statistics Flanders, 2021 was a peak year with an increase of 76 per cent in current prices. This was partly due to the sharp increase in exports of pharmaceutical products in connection with the coronavirus pandemic. In terms of the share of high-tech products in total exports, Flanders was just below the EU average. Flanders' share was 15 per cent of total exports in 2021, while the EU average was 18 per cent. Leading the way was Ireland (43 per cent).
