Roberta Metsola says Parliament can move forward on EU-US trade agreement

Discussions in the European Parliament on the approval of the trade agreement between the United States and the European Union can resume now that tensions over Greenland have eased. This was stated by European Parliament president Roberta Metsola on Thursday ahead of the extraordinary summit in Brussels.
On Wednesday, the European Parliament’s trade committee decided to suspend work on the EU-US trade agreement in response to Trump’s repeated statements on Greenland, which culminated in the threat of import tariffs against European countries sending military personnel to the autonomous Danish territory.
With the tariff threats now withdrawn and Trump having ruled out a military takeover of Greenland, the Parliament can move forward, Metsola said. The leaders of the political groups in the trade committee will meet on Monday to discuss the next steps.
Metsola said she was pleased that "cool heads had prevailed". "We have made no concessions on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Greenland and Denmark. We have made it clear that they are not for sale," she said.
EU leaders began an extraordinary summit on Thursday evening in response to US president Donald Trump’s recent statements on Greenland. The meeting focuses on EU-US relations and how the bloc will handle the next three years of the Trump administration.
