Proximus joins Telenet in deal to show Belgian football again

Belgian telecom operator Proximus has reached an agreement with sports streaming platform DAZN to broadcast Belgian football matches again from next season.

The deal means customers of Proximus and its budget brand Scarlet who subscribe to sports TV packages will once again be able to watch all matches from Belgium’s top football division, the Jupiler Pro League, through DAZN channels and the DAZN app.

The agreement follows a similar deal signed earlier this month between DAZN and Telenet, ending months of uncertainty about how fans in Belgium would access domestic football.

DAZN also holds the rights to other Belgian competitions, including the Challenger Pro League and the women’s Lotto Super League, as well as international leagues such as Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A and France’s Ligue 1.

The announcement comes after a difficult period for DAZN in Belgium. Last year, the company warned it could not continue its football rights agreement without deals with major telecom providers. At the time, matches were only available through the DAZN app, frustrating many supporters used to watching football through traditional TV providers.

Earlier this year, Belgian arbitrators ordered DAZN to continue broadcasting and paying for Belgian football rights while negotiations continued. The new agreements with both Proximus and Telenet now secure wider access to Belgian football for at least the coming seasons.
