Procession of the Holy Blood passes through the streets of Bruges

Like every year, the Procession of the Holy Blood passes through the city centre of Bruges on Ascension Day. Nearly 1,900 re-enactors take part, almost a hundred more than last year.
During the Procession of the Holy Blood, volunteers bring Biblical and historical stories to life in the streets of Brussels. The tradition dates back to 1304 and has been recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage of Humanity since 2009. The centrepiece is a small vial which, according to legend, contains a scrap of cloth stained with the blood of Christ.
“Many Bruges residents call this the most beautiful day of the year: it is an event that connects people and reminds us of the rich history of our city,” said general coordinator Matthieu Clarysse. According to Clarysse, the Procession of the Holy Blood “nowadays is more folklore than religion”.

Of the 1,889 participants, about 380 are younger than 18. “This shows that this centuries-old tradition still appeals to many families and young people in Bruges,” declared Clarysse. “The many spectators along the route also prove year after year that it is hugely popular.”
Behind the scenes, 242 staff members ensured that everyone got dressed on time and that everything runs smoothly. The organisation invested in more than 180 new costumes.
