Passenger killed as light aircraft crashes in Hasselt

One person has died after a light aircraft crashed in Hasselt on Friday evening, the prosecutor’s office has confirmed. The victim was a passenger in the plane. The pilot is in hospital.

Emergency services received several calls at about 17.20 from residents near Heidestraat who saw the plane heading towards the ground. They immediately attended and set up a perimeter around the aircraft.

“Two people were on board the plane, a man and a woman,” the public prosecutor confirmed. “The man, the pilot, was injured and transferred to the Jessa hospital. He is in a state of shock. The woman, a passenger, lost her life.”

The Federal Aviation Research Service and the Limburg Federal Judicial Police Laboratory will investigate the circumstances of the accident. A coroner has been appointed to investigate the death of the victim.
