Ostend sets up first protection zone for seals on the coast

To ensure peace and safety for seals that rest on the Klein Strand shores in Ostend, the city has decided to install a permanent fence, as many beachgoers have been disturbing the seals by trying to get too close. The measure aims to protect the animals while keeping the area safe for walkers, dogs and visitors.
A permanent wooden fence will now run parallel to the sea, from the Western Breakwater to the Eastern Breakwater. Even at low tide, visitors will no longer be able to approach the seals directly. Those wishing to view the animals from a distance. Because the fence will not extend into the water, it is expected to be more durable. Bathing is already prohibited in this zone, and there remains ample space for walking.

Previously, the area was secured with temporary barrier fences, but these left gaps at low tide, allowing people and dogs to access the seal zone. Volunteers were needed to monitor the site constantly. "Now, it is a permanent installation over the entire length. That should relieve the volunteers somewhat. Although it remains to be seen how all the visitors and also the animals will react," says alderman for animal welfare Fabrice Goffin.
The need for action had become urgent. "More and more seals come to rest here on the beach. We have even had 18 seals on this beach at once. That sometimes attracted hundreds of people who wanted to take photos. That caused a lot of inconvenience for the animals. Fortunately, they are now protected."
Volunteers will also receive a beach cabin, offering a sheltered place from which to keep watch.
