Ostend and Antwerp join forces to celebrate James Ensor

Ostend and Antwerp have launched the Ensor 2024 cultural programme, a year-long series of events to celebrate artist James Ensor on the 75th anniversary of his death.

Ensor is primarily connected with his home town of Ostend, where he spent most of his life. From December 2023 to August 2024, the coastal city will celebrate his work with exhibitions, music, walks, theatre, film and a programme for schools.

The largest collection of Ensor’s work is at the KMSKA in Antwerp, which will host one of the main exhibitions, from September 2024. It will look at how Ensor related to international contemporaries in impressionism and expressionism.

Events at the FoMu, ModeMuseum and Museum Plantin-Moretus will focus on other aspects of his life and his impact on contemporary artists. Museums in Brussels will also take part.

“Ensor was an innovator in art who left an extremely varied body of work that can be admired in just about every major museum around the world,” said minister-president Jan Jambon (N-VA) at the launch.
