Netherlands sends police to Knokke to deal with partying tourists
During the summer holidays, many young people from the Netherlands traditionally descend on the nightlife district of Knokke. Dutch police are joining forces with federal and local police to combat nuisance caused by partying tourists.
"In previous years, this target group has caused a lot of trouble. The cooperation with the Dutch police proved to be of great added value," says local police chief Steve Desmet.
This year, the local police are supported by several Dutch police units. At night, a Dutch biker team patrols the nightlife area to deal with problems with Dutch tourists. In addition, a Dutch officer from the Central Unit patrols alongside a local police inspector.

Dutch police on horseback also patrol some nights, with riders from the Belgian federal police. "The riders are easily accessible, highly visible and very suitable for preventive surveillance in places such as the beach, dunes and cycling and walking paths," says Desmet.
"Thanks to the cooperation, we can act more efficiently. For example, we can identify young people more quickly because our Dutch colleagues have access to Dutch information databases."
In addition, Dutch youngsters are more likely to engage with a Dutch officer because of the recognisability of the uniform, says Desmet. They also use social media actively and interactively to connect with young people online.
