Marlen Reusser beats Kopecky to first pink jersey in Giro d'Italia opener

Swiss cyclist Marlen Reusser (Movistar) claimed the opening time trial of the Giro d’Italia Women on Sunday in Bergamo. She completed the 14.2 km course in 17:22, finishing 12 seconds ahead of European and Belgian champion Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime). Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ) took third with 17:38.

Britain’s Anna Henderson was the first to break the 18-minute mark with 17:49. She was later displaced by Dutch rider Lieke Nooijen (17:46), followed by Anna van der Breggen, who shaved off another four seconds.

Three-time Giro winner Marianne Vos clocked 18:20, while Shirin van Anrooij posted a stronger 18:03. Australian champion Brodie Chapman had an early setback with a bike change just a minute into her ride.

At the intermediate check after 8.75 km, Reusser led with 10:48. Kopecky, four seconds behind at that point, couldn’t close the gap and finished 12 seconds adrift. Longo Borghini, the final rider on the course, conceded 16 seconds to Reusser.

Stage two on Monday runs 92 kilometres from Clusone to Aprica and finishes uphill.
