Justine Ghekiere claims title in Belgian Cycling Championship

Justine Ghekiere was crowned Belgian road champion on Sunday in Binche after launching a decisive attack in the final kilometre. Only Fien Van Eynde managed to follow, but in the sprint, Ghekiere proved narrowly stronger. Fleur Moors took third, outsprinting the chasing group a few seconds behind.

29-year-old Ghekiere, who claimed the mountain jersey at last year’s Tour, succeeds Lotte Kopecky as national champion. Kopecky, the reigning world champion and race favourite, had done much of the work in the chase during an early break, which was only caught deep into the finale. She opted not to contest the sprint for bronze and finished outside the top ten.
