M HKA organises concert for dogs during animal exhibition
The Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp, or M HKA, is organising a dog-friendly concert on 1 September. Brazilian artist Gaspar Cohen selected music that, according to scientific research, is particularly pleasant for dogs.
The concert is organised in the context of the museum's exhibition The Lives of Animals, which runs until the end of the summer and explores the theme of animal welfare and protection.
Cohen will provide the music. The idea of a dog-friendly concert was inspired by American philosopher Donna J Haraway's Companion Species Manifesto and scientific research into a dog's preferences in terms of sounds and music. The music focuses on the unique auditory sensitivities and capabilities of dogs, as well as their perceptual modes and ability to concentrate.
“It turns out, for example, that dogs have a very different ability to concentrate,” M HKA project leader Lode Geens told Flemish public broadcaster VRT. “The music is tailored to that, among other things."
M HKA is making some additional preparations for the animals. “There will be a dog therapist and we have taken special care to not make the concert too long," Geens said. "Moreover, everyone can come and go as they please.”
The concert takes place on the museum's rooftop terrace. It lasts about an hour and is free, but you need to book in advance via reservatie@muhka.be.
