Human remains have been discovered in the Waratah region on the west coast of Tasmania, Australian police confirmed on Wednesday, according to ABC News. Belgian tourist Céline Cremer went missing in the same area in 2023. Authorities say forensic analysis is still required to determine the identity of the remains.
Cremer, then 31 and from Liège, vanished on 17 June 2023 during a trip to Tasmania, more than two and a half years ago. She was last seen in the small village of Waratah, close to the trailhead for the popular Philosopher Falls walk, around ten kilometres from where the remains were found.
Her car was discovered in the Philosopher Falls car park shortly after she was reported missing by friends and family on 26 June 2023. Days of extensive searching by police at the time turned up no sign of her, and the formal search was suspended later that summer amid concerns she could not have survived the harsh bush conditions.
In December 2025, a renewed, privately organised search led by friends of Cremer and volunteers uncovered her smartphone about 60 metres from her last known location, reigniting efforts to find her and understand what happened.
The volunteer who recently found the human remains had been part of those ongoing efforts. Police said a pathologist reviewed images of the discovery and confirmed the remains were human, but formal forensic testing is still required before they can be linked to Cremer. Her family in Belgium has been informed.
Authorities plan to hold a press conference on Thursday to share further details as investigations continue.
