Turning sandwiches into beer: Eurostar focuses on circularity

Eurostar has presented its latest sustainability report to mark European Mobility Week. Circularity is a central pillar, with one of the flagship initiatives converting surplus sandwiches into craft beer. The high-speed rail operator also highlights the use of sustainable materials in new terminals and lounges.
“At Eurostar we are working to make circular principles central to all our choices, starting with the selection of suppliers and products,” said general secretary Gareth Williams.
“Since May 2024, unused sandwiches from Eurostar Premier on our continental routes have been transformed into craft beer through our partnership with French brewery Pain de Minuit. We are now working to extend this initiative to our Channel routes.”
Eurostar also reports that its new lounges in Paris and Brussels, which will open this year, have been designed with reuse in mind, recycling or repurposing old furniture.
For the refurbished terminal at Amsterdam Central, which reopened in February, architects chose flooring and ceilings with high environmental performance and a high recycled content.
The company further announced a new cycling policy, allowing passengers to buy bike parking at the same time as their cross-Channel train tickets. Stations are also being made more accessible, and in 2025 Eurostar signed a charter to improve inclusivity for passengers with autism, in partnership with SNCF Réseau.
