From sandwiches to beer: Eurostar's circular turn

Eurostar, the European high-speed rail operator, has presented its 2024 sustainability report to mark European Mobility Week. Circularity features as a central pillar, with one of the flagship initiatives converting surplus sandwiches into craft beer. The company also highlights the use of sustainable materials in new terminals and lounges.
“At Eurostar we are working to make circular principles central to all our choices, starting with the selection of suppliers and products,” explained Gareth Williams, Eurostar’s general secretary. “Since May 2024, unused sandwiches from Eurostar Premier on our continental routes have been transformed into craft beer through our partnership with French brewery Pain de Minuit. We are now working to extend this initiative to our Channel routes.”
Eurostar also reports that its new lounges in Paris and Brussels, which will open later this year, have been designed with reuse in mind, recycling or repurposing old furniture. For the refurbished terminal at Amsterdam Central, reopened in February, architects selected flooring and ceilings with high environmental performance and a high recycled content.
The company further announced a new cycling policy, allowing passengers to purchase bike parking at the same time as their Channel route tickets. Stations are also being made more accessible, and in 2025 Eurostar signed a charter to improve inclusivity for passengers with autism, in partnership with SNCF Réseau.
