Foreign Affairs asks Belgians in Iran and Israel to report to embassy

The Belgian ministry of foreign affairs has asked its nationals staying in Israel, Palestine, Iran, Lebanon and Jordan to register their presence online or report to the local Belgian embassy, a ministry spokesperson told Belga on Tuesday.

The ministry always recommends that Belgians travelling abroad register via the Travellers Online website. In light of the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, it is now also advising long-term Belgian residents of the region to report their presence to the embassy or consulate general.

On Friday, Belgium advised its nationals against travelling to Israel and the surrounding region. Since the end of May, it has strongly advised Belgian nationals, including those with dual nationality, not to travel to Iran for any reason.

'Everyone is safe'

Unlike some other countries, Belgium has not yet begun evacuating its nationals from Israel and Iran. "Everyone is safe," said Maxime Prévot, the country's minister of Foreign Affairs. Evacuation flights have been organised by Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland, and Ukraine has urged its citizens to leave both countries "as soon as possible".

Israel and Iran have been exchanging missile barrages and threats of war for five consecutive days, despite calls for de-escalation from major powers. Since launching its attack on Friday, Israel has continued to fire missiles into Iran, which has responded with missile and drone strikes.

Israel attacked the Iranian capital of Tehran again on Tuesday afternoon, with two loud explosions reported in the north and centre of the city by Iranian state media and AFP journalists. The streets of the usually bustling capital were largely empty on Tuesday, with many residents fleeing north to smaller rural towns or towards the border.
