Flemish MOOOV World Film Festival puts Palestine in the spotlight this year

The Flemish film festival MOOOV explicitly turns the spotlight on Palestine this year. This way, the organisation wants to emphasise the importance of cinema as a window on the world, “especially when those in power look away and human stories threaten to disappear from public debate”.
MOOOV will show stories about Palestine in seven films. The organisers of say that with these films, the world film festival “shows how love, humour and sadness come together in the stories of a people who continue to fight for humanity and visibility”.
This year, the festival will take place at five locations in Flanders: Beringen, Bruges, Lier, Turnhout and South-West Flanders – from 23 April to early May. The full programme will be announced shortly.
In the Sembène selection, MOOOV is showing Flemish premieres and international films “that deserve a second life on the big screen”. All films in this section are eligible for the Sembène Award, the audience and quality award that MOOOV presents annually to the best world film shown in Flemish cinemas. This year, last year's winner, the Iranian film “It was just an accident”, will also be screened.
In addition, the film festival also shows films that would otherwise struggle to find their way to Flanders. The films will be shown in the thematic categories “Coming of age”, “Female stories”, “Family matters”, “Lens on life” (documentary) and “Moving music”.
There will also be something for the little ones: together with Peuterspeelpunt, MOOOV is organising free film screenings for toddlers and pre-schoolers on Friday 24 April and Thursday 30 April.
Finally, prizes will once again be awarded by various juries: an international jury, a jury of inmates from Merksplas prison and a youth jury. In addition, an audience award will be presented, chosen by festival visitors.
