Flemish listeners turn to digital radio over FM for the first time

For the first time, more Flemish listeners are tuning in to digital radio than to FM. The findings come from a study commissioned by Flemish Media minister Cieltje Van Achter, as reported by media groups VRT, DPG Media and Mediahuis.
The research indicates that a tipping point has been reached in 2025, with 54 per cent of total listening taking place on digital channels such as DAB+, online or digital TV. In 2023, that figure stood at 49 per cent.
There are now more people listening exclusively via digital platforms than relying solely on FM. DAB+ remains the most popular digital format, accounting for a 32 per cent share.
“The fact that more and more people, including those over 65, are making the switch shows how natural digital listening has become. Digital radio is breathing new life into our Flemish radio and audio culture: with more choice, higher quality and greater ease of use,” says Van Achter.
Despite the rapid growth of digital listening, FM remains in widespread use. Earlier this year, Van Achter dropped the proposed target date for phasing out FM broadcasts. A study had suggested January 2031 as a realistic timeline, but the minister judged that to be too soon.
