Flanders plans 56,000 extra social homes by 2042

The Flemish government plans to tackle the lack of social housing by building up to 56,000 extra social homes by 2042. “We are facing an enormous housing crisis,” explains Hans Bonte (socialist Vooruit), Flemish minister of Housing. “Purchase and rental prices are rising year after year, and more and more families are having to rely on social housing.”
As a result, the waiting list has grown to 215,337 families. “Massively building more social housing is our top priority. In this regard, it is important that every municipality does its part and that we also provide sufficient support to municipalities. Whether you live in Aalter or Zaventem, everyone has the right to an affordable home,” Bonte emphasizes.
45,000 homes were allocated to the 285 Flemish municipalities. In addition, an extra budget has been provided for 11,000 social homes that municipalities can voluntarily subscribe to. Ghent and Antwerp had previously indicated they wanted to make use of this. "Moreover, municipalities that fell behind in the past are encouraged to catch up," says Bonte.
To build and renovate these extra homes, the Flemish government is allocating a budget of more than 1 billion euros per year during this legislative term. To accelerate the pace of construction, housing associations can count on a favorable loan.
