Flanders and the Netherlands develop joint action plan on AI and language

Flanders and the Netherlands are working together on a joint action plan focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and language. Flemish Media minister Cieltje Van Achter announced the initiative on Tuesday following a meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Dutch Language Union.
The Dutch Language Union, established in 1980 by Belgium and the Netherlands, traditionally focused on spelling reforms and support of Dutch language courses. However, the rise of AI has dramatically changed the way language is used, according to minister Van Achter.
“AI is radically changing the way we produce, process, and use language, with major implications for language policy and for sectors like media and culture,” Van Achter explained. “In this evolving landscape, the Language Union plays a crucial role as a connector, coordinator, and policy developer.”
To address these changes, the Union is leading a collaborative process involving experts and stakeholders from both Flanders and the Netherlands. Together, they aim to develop a shared policy vision, a concrete action plan, and a strategic agenda on AI and language.
AI innovation
“AI offers tremendous opportunities,” Van Achter said. “From automatic subtitling and accessible content to smart tools in research and heritage. Flanders is eager to work with the Netherlands to create an AI policy for the Dutch language that is both future-proof and culturally grounded.”
The cooperation will involve extensive knowledge exchange and stakeholder engagement across both regions. The Dutch Language Union will coordinate efforts and set a shared agenda to benefit the entire sector. International initiatives, especially those within the European context, will also be considered.
“Flanders sees AI as a key driver of innovation in language, media, and culture—and as an opportunity to deepen its collaboration with the Netherlands,” Van Achter concluded.
