Flanders and Red Cross buy emergency generators for Ukraine

The Flemish government and the Red Cross are each allocating 200,000 euros to buy emergency generators for the Ukrainian population. They are experiencing a particularly cold winter, as Russia continues to attack the country’s energy infrastructure.
The Flemish government is activating for the first time the Flanders Humanitarian Emergency Fund, established in December, to provide urgent support to the affected population in Ukraine. The support comes after a targeted emergency appeal from the Ukrainian authorities and the Ukrainian Red Cross.
Sixteen powerful emergency generators are purchased, amongst others for hospitals. These will be delivered to the affected regions via the Ukrainian Red Cross.
With this immediate support, we as the Flemish government want to support the Ukrainian population in these difficult times,” stated Flemish minister president Matthias Diependaele. “The emergency generators are essential to keep healthcare and other vital services running during this harsh winter of war.”
Philippe Vandekerckhove of the Flemish Red Cross points out that the local Red Cross is doing everything it can to help the population. It for example provides heating points in cities where people can warm up, charge their mobile phones and take a break.
