Farmers protest against Mercosur agreement at Ostend Airport

Farmers have been protesting against the Mercosur agreement at Ostend Airport since Monday morning. The protest mainly focuses on the airport's cargo segment. The airport emphasises that travellers can still access the airport by car, although there may be delays in the area due to traffic congestion.
Since Monday morning, farmers have been protesting at Ostend Airport. Around sixty tractors gathered at the airport building. According to the airport, travellers are still able to drive their cars to the building. However, traffic disruptions are possible in the area. “Please take into account possible delays in the area and leave for the airport in good time,” stated the airport.
The protest mainly focuses on the airport's cargo segment. "No lorries can enter or leave. Food from Mercosur countries amongst others enters the country via airports without proper controls, and we want to denounce that,” declared Mark Wulfrancke of the General Farmers' Union (ABS). “Those products arrive here and are given a Belgian stamp. As a result, consumers don't even know where their food comes from. This agreement is the last straw."
ABS does not want to affect travellers with this action. “Travellers can simply drive on and will hardly notice anything. We feel supported by consumers, so this action is not aimed at them.”
The action will continue throughout the day and may last longer, possibly even until 20 January.
