Evenepoel second at World Championships in Rwanda after frustrating race

Remco Evenepoel has taken the silver medal at the World Cycling Championships in Rwanda after a frustrating afternoon for him, with two bike changes. Tadej Pogacar rode to his second consecutive world title in Kigali.
Defending champion Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia attacked on Mount Kigali, more than 100 kilometres from the finish line in Rwanda. Belgian leader Remco Evenepoel followed for a while, but then fell behind.
While Pogacar rode away with Mexican Isaac Del Toro, Evenepoel changed bikes for the first time due to a saddle problem. A little later, he had to stop again for a second bike change, expressing his frustration while waiting for the Belgian team car.
With 66 kilometres to go, Pogacar broke away on his own. In the background, a stubborn Evenepoel managed to quickly rejoin the first pursuers, who, under his impetus, were reduced to a trio, also including Irishman Ben Healy and Dane Matias Skjelmose. Although the three worked well together, they did not get any closer to Pogacar.
In the end, Pogacar crossed the finish line with a lead of about a minute and a half. Evenepoel, clearly “the best of the rest”, broke away on his own 20 km from the finish line and can console himself with the silver medal. The bronze went to Ben Healy.
A week ago, Evenepoel became world time trial champion in Kigali. So he is going home with a gold and a silver medal.
