Evenepoel dominates time trial in Rwanda to claim third consecutive world title

Remco Evenepoel has won the time trial at the World Cycling Championships in Kigali, Rwanda, with a dominant performance to claim his third consecutive world title.

The Olympic champion finished more than 1 minute ahead of the rider in second place, Australian Jay Vine. Belgian teammate Ilan Van Wilder finished third.

Before the race, Slovenian Tadej Pogacar seemed to be the biggest challenger, but he was overtaken by Evenepoel on a cobbled climb towards the end of the 40.8km race and had to settle for fourth place, a full 2:37 behind.

25-year-old Evenepoel is the third rider in history to win three consecutive world titles, after Australian Michael Rogers and German Tony Martin.

The men’s road race is scheduled for next Sunday. Pogacar won his first world title in spectacular fashion last year in Zurich and is the favourite to take the crown again.
