Elise Mertens returns for Billie Jean King Cup tie against US in Ostend

Elise Mertens will return to the Belgian squad for next month’s Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers against the United States, marking her first appearance for the national tennis team since the end of 2022.
Belgium’s number one has volunteered for the home tie, which will take place on 10 and 11 April at the Coretec Dôme in Ostend. The matches will be played on clay, the Belgian Tennis Federation confirmed on Friday.
The 30-year-old from Limburg has largely prioritised her individual career in recent seasons. Her return is seen as a significant boost ahead of the clash with the Americans.
“Her presence is, of course, crucial to competing against an opponent like the USA, along with the rest of our strong team”
"We are very pleased that Elise Mertens has confirmed that she will include this match in her schedule. Her presence is, of course, crucial to competing against an opponent like the USA, along with the rest of our strong team," said captain Wim Fissette.
"We know it's going to be a tough assignment, but playing on home soil, in a beautiful venue, and with the support of the crowd, anything is possible. We're really looking forward to experiencing two intense and wonderful days of tennis here."
Belgium were drawn against the USA last month. A place in the World Group Finals in Shenzhen, China, in September is at stake. The Belgians secured their spot in the qualifiers by defeating promoted Türkiye and Germany in the play-offs in November.
The choice of venue and surface was logical, Fissette said. "It's a location where tennis is alive and well and where we can reach a broad and enthusiastic audience, especially during the Easter holidays," he said. "This match falls perfectly in the run-up to the clay season, making this surface a good fit for their athletic preparation."
