Herd of elephants appears near Antwerp Central station

A dozen life-sized model elephants appeared on Wednesday morning at Operaplein, near Antwerp Central station. The stunt follows similar sightings last week in Brussels and Liège, but its purpose remains unclear.

"This time, the giants are making their appearance at one of the most visited places in the city," PR agency Whyte said in a statement. "The mysterious herd of elephants surprises young and old. It looks as if they’ve escaped from the zoo."

Despite the location, the stunt is reportedly unrelated to the nearby zoo or to TV personality Bart De Pauw’s new stage show The Hour of the Elephant, which premiered on Tuesday in the city.

A sign next to the elephants features a QR code linking to an empty Instagram profile.
