E-learning booming among Flemish companies

E-learning is firmly on the rise among Flemish companies. While one in five companies used e-learning in 2018, that figure has now risen to half of all companies, shows the triennial Business Survey conducted by the Social and Economic Council of Flanders (SERV).
Since 1998, the Innovation & Labour Foundation of the Social and Economic Council of Flanders (SERV) has been conducting a large-scale survey every three years to gauge current issues among Flemish companies. In 2025, the scope includes training, digitisation, sustainability, innovation and workload. The first report focuses on how regularly Flemish companies invest in training and how they shape their training policy.
The survey shows that three-quarters of Flemish companies invest in staff training. They use both traditional forms of training (53 per cent) and on-the-job training (53 per cent) and e-learning. E-learning, a form of digital distance learning, is clearly on the rise. In the 2018 survey, only 19 percent of companies said they used it, compared to 49 percent now.
"This ensures that employees have more opportunities to upskill and continue to develop”
“It’s positive that Flemish companies are attaching increasing importance to training,” said SERV chairman Stijn Gryp. “This ensures that employees have more opportunities to upskill and continue to develop.”
Despite the increasing importance of training, Flemish companies also experience obstacles in offering training courses. The most common obstacle is a lack of time. Almost four in ten companies indicate that they do not have space in their work schedules to offer training courses. Cost is also a significant barrier: 37 per cent consider training too expensive. Smaller companies clearly find it more difficult to offer training than larger ones.
