Popularity of paid training leave continues to grow
One in 47 employees at Flemish companies took training leave last academic year, more than a 10 per cent increase from the previous year, HR service provider Acerta reported on Wednesday.
Training leave (VOV), introduced by the Flemish government five years ago, can be granted to an employee for up to 250 hours each year. Of this, up to 125 hours is granted for training an employee takes at their own request and 125 hours for training suggested by their employer.
According to Acerta, the increased popularity is due to the increase in the number of hours of leave employees can take. People can also combine several short training courses. “The efforts to encourage lifelong learning in the workplace are paying off,” said Sophie Vantomme, legal expert at Acerta Consult.
VOV is more likely to be used by employees of larger companies, those working in manual jobs, and by employees in the social profit sector. Young people also take more training courses.
Acerta based its research on the data of more than 270,000 employees with permanent contracts, at about 29,000 Flemish employers in the private sector with headquarters in Flanders.
