Divorced parents in social housing to each receive family rent discount

Divorced parents who both live in social housing will now each be entitled to a full family discount on their rent, following a decision by Flemish housing minister Melissa Depraetere (Vooruit).
Tenants in social housing who have a dependent child are eligible for a family discount, an additional reduction applied to their social rent. The discount amounts to 23 euros per child.
Until now, a different arrangement applied to children in shared custody. In those cases, only one parent was entitled to the full family discount, although parents were able to agree to divide the reduction between them.
That system will now change. Under the new rules, both parents in shared custody will be entitled to the full family discount. “Raising a child is expensive. It makes sense that we help vulnerable parents pay their rent,” says Depraetere.
