Customs increasingly intercept ‘zombie drugs’ flakka and Monkey Dust
Belgian customs officers are increasingly intercepting the dangerous synthetic drugs flakka and Monkey Dust. They are often nicknamed "zombie drugs" because of their characteristic effect of putting users into a zombie-like state.
The public prosecutor's office previously reported an increase in the number of cases concerning flakka and Monkey Dust. Customs figures now confirm that trend, the Federal Public Service Finance said.
While customs confiscated only 16g of flakka in 2022, they have already intercepted 1,844g this year. In addition, 1,737g of Monkey Dust were seized in 2024. All consignments were found in postal consignments bound for the UK.
Flakka and Monkey Dust are very dangerous and highly addictive synthetic designer drugs whose effects are more potent and dangerous than those of ecstasy or cocaine. Use can lead to severe hallucinations, uncontrolled movements and violent behaviour.
Users often experience a reduced level of consciousness that drives them to dangerous acts. Even with limited use, they can cause significant short-term damage to mental and physical health.
