Brussels Urban Sessions highlight the benefits of ‘urban sports’ at Cinquantenaire Park

From 4 to 6 July, Brussels' Cinquantenaire Park will host the Brussels Urban Sessions, a large-scale summer event featuring sports such as BMX Freestyle, skateboarding, breakdancing, 3x3 basketball and parkour, as well as street art and music. The event aims to make sport accessible to everyone and to support “new forms of sporting and cultural expression”.
According to the City of Brussels’ alderwoman of sports Florence Frelinx, the Brussels Urban Sessions will highlight the “universal, accessible, playful and affordable” nature of these sports. “These sports are deeply rooted in our urban reality,” she declared in a press release. “They do not require large facilities: they make use of pavements, squares, slopes and vacant lots. They bring people together and create communities.”
Sport in general is “a great way to reveal the beauty” of Brussels, added the alderwoman. “Just like at the Olympic Games in Paris, I want to create a strong link between sport and heritage in Brussels. Bringing sport to life at our iconic locations means appreciating our heritage while making it accessible, vibrant and close to the people of Brussels. Sport should be present everywhere in Brussels.”
In addition to the main event in the Cinquantenaire Park, the City of Brussels is organising the “Urban Sports in Brussels” series of free initiations. These take place on Wednesday 2 July in three Brussels neighbourhoods.
