Brussels inaugurates 1,000th bicycle parking box

The 1,000th bicycle box in Brussels was inaugurated on Wednesday in Schaerbeek, bringing the total number of secure bicycle parking spaces in the region to 5,000. There are also 36 places for cargo bikes in 18 adapted bicycle boxes.

The secure boxes are mainly located around the large car parks and near the Bourse and De Brouckère metro stations and are managed by the bicycle department of regional parking agency parking.brussels.

Although four new boxes are installed each year in each commune, this is not enough to satisfy the growing number of cyclists in Brussels. The waiting list to rent a box has never been longer: at the end of August, 11,815 people were waiting for a place.

The new management contract with parking.brussels aims to create 21,250 new secure bicycle parking spaces by 2026.

"There are many people in Brussels who would like to cycle but don't because they don't have a locked place to park their bike safely or because they are afraid that their bike will be stolen," said Brussels Mobility minister Elke Van den Brandt.

"We are committed to the fight against bike theft with the police zones and we are working with parking.brussels and several operators on many secure parking solutions."
