Belgium score 12 goals in 2 matches as World Cup qualification gathers pace

Belgium comfortably beat Liechtenstein and Kazakhstan in their latest World Cup qualifying matches, moving up to second place in Group J. Three days after dispatching Liechtenstein 6-0 in Vaduz, the Red Devils beat Kazakhstan by the same score in Brussels.
“We did an excellent job during the international break and gave more than was required,” coach Rudi Garcia told a press conference following the victory at Anderlecht’s Lotto Park on Sunday.
“Kazakhstan played a solid game against Wales on Thursday [a 1-0 defeat] and they didn’t deserve to lose. We played at our best today. I think we did a perfect job, and even more than that. This international break has been excellent, but we’re keeping our feet on the ground.”
New captain Youri Tielemans scored twice against Liechtenstein, with Kevin De Bruyne and Jérémy Doku claiming two goals each against Kazakhstan.
“We cherish Kevin,” said Garcia. “It’s wonderful to see him at work here. He is so good, in a class of his own. His talent is obvious. He was still very motivated and is a true leader.”

North Macedonia currently lead the group, one point ahead of Belgium having played one game more. The two face each other at the Planet Group Arena in Ghent on 10 October before the Red Devils play Wales in Cardiff on 13 October.
The team that finishes top of the group will qualify automatically for next summer’s World Cup in the US and Mexico, with the second-placed team entering a play-off.
Garcia: “Next month, we will be facing two opponents of a completely different calibre. Both matches will be decisive for World Cup qualification. We are looking forward to it, but we are not there yet.”
