Red Devils survive Welsh comeback in 4-3 win

Belgium’s Red Devils won a wild match against Wales on Monday night, winning 4-3 in Brussels in their second World Cup 2026 qualifier.

The Belgians had a perfect start, going 3-0 up in the first 30 minutes with goals from Romelu Lukaku (penalty), Youri Tielemans, and Jeremy Doku. But just before half-time, Wales got one back through a Harry Wilson penalty. After the break, Sorba Thomas made it 3-2, and Brennan Johnson later equalised with a header.

Kevin De Bruyne ultimately spared Belgian blushes with a late winner, scoring in the final minutes to secure the win and avoid another setback after the disappointing 1-1 draw in North Macedonia last week.

”If you’re 3-0 up, you should never let the other team come back”

Head coach Rudi Garcia was relieved but also clear: “The most important thing is the three points”, he said. “But if you’re 3-0 up, you should never let the other team come back. We showed mental strength, but we still have work to do.”

Belgium now have four points from two games, behind North Macedonia (8) and Wales (7). After the summer break, they face Liechtenstein away on 4 September, then host Kazakhstan three days later.
