The Belgian Cats beat Germany 83-59 in the EuroBasket Women quarter-finals in Piraeus, Greece, on Wednesday. They will now face Italy in the semi-finals.
Emma Meesseman led her team to the semi-finals with a dazzling performance, scoring 30 points and grabbing nine rebounds. The Belgian Cats had finished the group stage in Brno, Czech Republic, with a perfect record after defeating Portugal, Montenegro and the Czech Republic.
The Cats’ victory at EuroBasket 2023 marked a historic milestone, earning Belgium its first-ever European basketball title. Since then, the team has been searching for a new high point.
The Belgian Cats also need a strong EuroBasket performance to take part in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup next year. A tournament win would secure a direct spot in the group stage.
The Belgian basketball federation appointed American coach Mike Thibault in January to lead the team into a new era. The 74-year-old is the most successful coach in WNBA history, having won multiple Olympic gold medals with the US women’s national team.
