Belgian teenager arrested in Ghent over contract killing in Spain

A Belgian minor has been arrested in Ghent on suspicion of involvement in a contract killing on Spain’s southern coast. The Spanish National Police confirmed the arrest in a press release on Wednesday.
The suspect is accused of shooting a 25-year-old Dutchman dead in Fuengirola on 7 December, 2024. Spanish police say the murder has now been solved, with six people arrested in connection with the case. A seventh suspect was killed in the Netherlands during an attempted arrest.
Among those detained is the alleged shooter, a Belgian teenager who was underage at the time of the crime. He was arrested in Ghent on 20 June under a European Arrest Warrant, extradited to Spain on 11 July and placed in a closed juvenile detention centre.
The victim was gunned down with an assault rifle on the morning of 7 December 2024. Police recovered the weapon and several shell casings near the body.
According to Spanish investigators, the victim worked at a cannabis club close to the scene. The assailant lay in wait, shot him multiple times, discarded the rifle and escaped on a bicycle. While the precise motive remains unclear, police believe the attack may be linked to a wider killing spree within Dutch organised crime.
Dutch and Belgian authorities have been working closely with their Spanish counterparts in recent months, with Eurojust also playing a role in advancing the investigation.
