Defence minister denounces Russia's breach of NATO airspace

Belgian Defence minister Theo Francken has called Russia’s violation of NATO airspace "unacceptable". Several Russian drones entered Polish territory on Tuesday night, forcing Poland to close its airports and shoot down drones that were seen as a direct threat.
According to the Polish army, multiple Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace during a large-scale attack on western Ukraine. Several were shot down in what Warsaw described as an “act of aggression” and “a real threat to the safety of citizens”.
Air defence and radar systems have since resumed normal operations and Warsaw’s international airport has reopened, though travellers still face disruption. Poland is looking for the downed drones, with one already being found in the village of Czosnówka, some 40km from the Belarusian border.
In a reaction on X, Francken called the violation of NATO airspace "unacceptable". “We must further increase our vigilance and respond appropriately to any form of Russian aggression,” he said. He also said counter-drone purchases must be prioritised, adding that a "big purchase" is coming soon.
'Dangerous precedent'
The incidents are the first time since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine that Poland has shot down Russian drones.
According to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, they were part of an overnight attack on Ukraine involving over 400 drones. At least eight drones entered NATO airspace, which he described as "an extremely dangerous precedent for Europe".
"Moscow always pushes the boundaries of what is possible," Zelensky said on X. "A strong response is needed – and it can only be a joint response by all partners." He called for more weapons and new sanctions against Russia. "Russia must feel that the war cannot be expanded and will have to be ended."
