Belgium to buy Polish portable air defence systems

Belgium and Poland are set to deepen their military cooperation. According to a statement from the Polish ministry of Defence, the agreement includes Belgium’s planned purchase of 200 to 300 Polish-made portable air defence systems.
Defence ministers Theo Francken and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz signed the declaration of intent during a visit to Mesko, the Polish defence firm that manufactures the Piorun system, which is designed to counter aircraft, helicopters, drones and missiles. “Pioruns have proven their effectiveness in Ukraine,” said Kosiniak-Kamysz.
The agreement covers training cooperation, particularly in relation to the F-35A fighter jets bought by both countries. Belgian and Polish pilots are currently undergoing joint training in the US.
The two ministers also discussed bilateral military ties, cooperation within the EU and NATO and continued support for Ukraine.
